Introduction to BAPS Worldwide Children's Activities

Children are to a society what seeds are to a tree. Just as a healthy seed will grow into a sturdy, productive tree, a child with good character and healthy body will make for a vibrant society. The Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) is a socio-spiritual organization anchored to the Vedic principles propagated by Bhagwan Swaminarayan (1781-1830). Its fundamental aim is to elevate individuals through its socio-spiritual activities spread over 52 countries of the world.

Amid the wide spectrum of BAPS activities, one of its unique features is its children's forum. Yogiji Maharaj pioneered it in 1954, and today it has mushroomed into a an active worldwide movement through the efforts and blessings of Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

This introductory section on BAPS Child Care is a colorful and inspiring discovery about a mega-organization that endeavors to mould children to create a better society and a brighter future!

Bal Mandals (assemblies of children for spiritual and moral education)

Hi friends. Jai Swaminarayan. We have more than 8000 Bal Mandals (Children's Centers) worldwide. Around 100,000 children are trained annually in our Bal Mandals. Each Bal Mandal has a weekly Bal sabha (assemblies of children for spiritual and moral education) That means over 260,000 children's assemblies are conducted annually.

Primary Aim

The primary aim of our Child Care Centers is 'Character Building.'
As a consequence of the growing decadence in values our world is overwhelmed with spiraling problems. That is why our primary goal is to inspire values in children.
For character building we focus on three important things:

  1. To develop virtues like humility, tolerance, service, etc. Organize children's lives through training programs in time management, cleanliness, personal health care and endeavor.
  2. To instill pride and dignity for our culture through traditions, history and heritage.
  3. To foster our faith through daily prayer, satsang, rituals, spiritual reading and devotional singing.

Weekly Children's Assembly (Balsabha)

Our powerful avenue for character-building is the weekly children's assembly (or Bal sabha). Absolutely free of cost and conducted by service-oriented volunteers, these children's assemblies have an agenda of moral stories, skits, drama, motivational episodes, sports, competitions, audio-visual shows, pilgrimages and other interesting activities through which children can learn and imbibe values.

Education

The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha cares a great deal about our educational progress.
It has built more than 30 academic complexes where 18,000 students study.
In Bal sabha also, we learn through study guidance programs organized annually.
BAPS also cares for poor kids who are unable to study because of financial and other problems. For this, scholarships are awarded to 5,000 students annually. Students are also provided with free coaching classes and motivation programs.
Do you remember the earthquake in Gujarat ? The BAPS constructed 49 new schools for the Earthquake-Affected Children, and donated 25,000 academic kits to children.

Healthcare

Our healthcare is also taken care of by BAPS. For this we have health awareness seminars and diagnostic camps wherein more than 50,000 children are treated annually.
For our tribal brothers and sisters 10 mobile vans are provided for tribal children's health- care. Annually, thousands of children benefit from BAPS hospitals, diagnostic camps and yoga classes.

Talent Development

Do you want to become an orator? Do you love folk dancing ? Are you good at singing? Then, there's good news for you. BAPS Children's Forums organize competitions every year for Talent Development. In 1989, 15,000 children took part in an International Convention of such competitions.

Gujarati Learning Centers

In many centers of North America, UK and other countries, Gujarati learning classes are also organized for children.

Interested in Music?

For those interested in music, harmonium and tabla classes are run in some of our major centers

Sports

For our physical fitness, Sports Competitions are also held occasionally. In our weekly assemblies also, we are provided with different games to play.

Cultural programmes

During the summer vacations, expert teachers train children in a variety of performing arts. Children then exhibit their skills and talents during stage performances. In May 2000, cultural programs were performed by children in 1,000 towns and villages of Gujarat, through which 15 million people were inspired.
Also in 2001, 130,000 children participated in cultural programs and competitions.

Prayers for Patients

Yes. We care for society. We pray daily for peace and happiness for all the people of the world. We also pray for sick and the poor. We go to hospitals and pray for the sick.

Anti-Addiction Campaign

Friends, we are absolutely sure you would never ever smoke or have any addiction in your life. Can you imagine an 'addiction-free world'? Wow! A heaven on earth. Yes, Our BAPS Bal Mandals also gave a thought to that. In May 2000, over 12,000 children participated in anti-addiction campaigns in 4,000 cities and villages.
Out of 800,000 people contacted, 400,000 vowed to give up addictions. Isn't that remarkable?

Ideal Family Campaign

Friends, as you know, in today's society a burning problem is broken families. Disunity in a family leads to disunity in society. So in May 2003 in India and so many countries, our young fleet of 20,000 children visited 450,000 families to pass the message of 'Family Unity' of our guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj. This project created a lot of awareness among many families.

Balnagari - Children's World

During BAPS mega-festivals a Children's World is created for the entertainment and enlightenment of children and parents. It is entirely managed by 12,000 child volunteers who guide, perform and offer voluntary services in its various departments. Like a mini-university it provides an opportunity to develop our educational, social and personal skills and character.

Environment Awareness

Friends, you probably agree that we all wish for a Pollution Free World. For that, in our Child Care Centers, we have 'Environment Awareness Programs' where we are informed about the effects of pollution. We also participate in 'house projects to - house campaigns' to explain about the benefits of environmental care.

Volunteer Force

You must be wondering who handles all these fabulous activites. Well, by the grace of our guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj, we have a network of 100 sadhus and 8000 dedicated volunteers worldwide especially for BAPS Child Care activities. Annually, 8,000 volunteers spend 2.1 million man-hours for the physical, moral and spiritual development of children. Apart from conducting assemblies they also spare time to inspire and help children academically. Throughout year the volunteers regularly contact thousands of parents to awaken them to the need and importance of moulding their children. The ever-smiling and hard-working volunteers are the loved friends and guides of thousands of children and their parents.

Inspirer

Lastly, who do you think is the inspirer behind more than 50 activities for children? It is our guru, Pramukh Swami Maharaj.
His Divine Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj is the inspiring force behind the multifarious BAPS children's activities. Pramukh Swami Maharaj is a unique spiritual master. For him every child is divine. And that is why he endeavors to fulfill all our aspirations and needs - be they academic, medical, social or spiritual.
