We need him to be with us when we have no one. He is a role model to us. We need him so that we can worship the real god. I think that Mahant Swami is great example of this as he is our friend, our guide and our guru. He helps us to make tough decisions, he makes sure we are safe, he helps us in every way possible. He is there so we can worship him and he is also there so we have someone to look up to and someone's footsteps to follow. My answer to the first question would be referred to the Swamini Vato. Gunatitanand Swami has said," None other than bhagwan and his sant can grant us liberation." Bapa has also mentioned in his katha in Sarangpur," Aa manushya jivan bahu durlabh chhe. Ane apanane Swaminarayan Bhagwan madya che. Pachi shu rahyu?" Literally translated, it means, " The fact that we have got the life of a human is very rare. Not only that, we have also attained Swaminarayan Bhagwan. What is left to attain?" To sum it up, that is why we need an ultimate guru. To attain Moksha in this birth. My answer to the second question is basic. Satpurush is the ultimate guru, because he is Aksharbrahma, he is "overpowered."
