Hindu Festivals

Hinduism is made up of a tapestry of utsavas, or festivals. From Diwali and its sparkling fireworks to Holi and its wonderful colours to Swaminarayan Jayanti and its dazzling stage programs, our utsavas bring us great joy and inspiration.

Which utsavas do you like the most? What about them in particular do you enjoy?

Jai Swaminarayan, It is extremely hard to choose a favourite festival when all of them are celebrated with such enthusiasm in our sanstha! This was a very tough decision but I feel like my top favourite utsav would be Holi. In many of the kirtans written by the Paramhansas, there is a detailed explanation on how maharaj played holi and the divya smrutis he gave. Further, Pramukh Swami Maharaj always gave phenomenal smruti during the annual rangotsav in Sarangpur, where haribhaktas from different parts of Gujarat would come together to celebrate with Bapa. Watching these smrutis through Guruhari Darshan gives so much nostalgia! In 2018, when Mahant Swami Maharaj came to Sydney, Australia, he celebrated Holi with us. He gave immense labh and latkas, making that day unforgettable for me! This is why Holi is my favourite festival.

Jai Swaminarayan, to my fellow bal-balikas! Personally my favourite Utsav/Festival has to be Diwali! Like my immigrant parents before me, I too have been able to make Diwali my own for my family. So, without further ado, here’s my list of the three reasons on why I love Diwali. Firstly Diwali is a time to begin something anew,Diwali, which celebrates good over evil, marks the start of the Hindu New Year: we clean our homes, decorate our mantel with fresh flower garlands and set our intentions for the months to come Secondly,Diwali is loud, colourful and joyous,Bright colors are key to the festival. As a kid, Diwali meant stringing lights through the greenery of our yard and around the front door; rushing home from school to change into my new Indian outfit; and sitting with my parents for puja (worship) in our prayer room Lastly,Diwali's message about good over evil is timeless,Hindu texts refer to Ravana as a scholar whose arrogance, pride and ego transformed him into a demon (he is commonly depicted with 10 heads to represent a broad knowledge that manifested in aggression). The message behind this myth — that the possibility of evil is located deep inside each one of us — is a powerful truth to be reminded of. These are my Three Reasons on why I love Diwali as a Utsav! Jay Swaminarayan, I like Diwali because it brings cheer at home, a few days before we clean the house, make rangoli, sometimes I help my mom make different foods & dishes, & we wear new clothes! I also like Ganesh Chathurthi because we do puja, arti, & thaal together, make sweets , & do visarjan(when you let Ganesh clay murti dissolve)!

My favorite utsav is Swaminarayan Jayanti. I like to do nirjala on this day. It is my favorite part. Even though it is tough for me, I still do it. My motivation is just thinking that Swaminarayan Bhagwan was born on this day! My other motivation is thinking that Mahant Swami Maharaj will be raji.

I love kids diwali because we get to play games, eat yummy things, and get to learn stuff about Diwali. My favorite part is playing games. I like all of the games.

Jai Swaminarayan, my favorite festival is Diwali. The most thing I enjoy is how we decorate our houses with lights and also remember all the stories about Diwali and the background story. I also really enjoy Chaturmas, so we can follow our Niyams such as give up favorite food, do Kacha, or Pakka Ektana. JAI SWAMINARAYAN!!
