Inspired by Pujya Pramukh Swami
Maharaj on the 3rd July 2004 the Johannesburg Satsang Mandal hosted
a Children’s Fun Day for children from shelters, as well as from
neighbouring informal settlements were invited to the Mandir. Many of
these children are poverty-stricken and do not always have square meals.
Satsangis picked up the children
from their homes. About fifty children aged 3 to 15 years, from various
places in Johannesburg were brought to the mandir. About fifty satsangi
Balaks and Balikas joined them.
For many, it was the first time
that they had entered a mandir. They were explained the basics of Hinduism
and then participated in performing arti. The older children enjoyed
holding the diva plates while the younger children enjoyed ringing the
bell.
After a late breakfast, the fun
events began. Jumping castles had been arranged as well as other fun
games. Satsangi children mixed freely with children from the shelters
as they ventured from one game to another. Yuvaks dressed in costume
characters entertained the children. After lunch the children were presented
gifts like candy floss, balloons and pencil sets. Through out the day,
the Mahila mandal served food to the children.
The tired but excited children
were taken home late in the day. All present benefitted from the experience.
The shelter kids learnt something inspiring about Hindu Dharma and culture.
The BAPS Swaminarayan mandir intends hosting such events in the future. |
