Niyams

How are you? We hope things are going well.
Have you have ever made a promise to someone? Well, we do it all the time, but at the same time we also break promises just as quickly as we make them. This is a bad habit we develop as the idea of promising something loses its value.
Imagine a friend made a promise to you, and then broke it – would you trust him again? Maybe once, maybe twice but the third time would you trust his promise? Probably not. Why? Because you know he will not follow through.
When we decide to take a niyam we are basically making a promise to God. For example, if we take a niyam to no longer eat out – we are promising God and our Guru that we will no longer eat out. If we promise to not go to the cinema then we are making a promise to God and our Guru that we will not go. However, when we break these promises again and again – can you imagine how Maharaj and Swami feel? Can you imagine how much trust they have in us after?
Every niyam that you break, no matter how small – eats away at your character. Whenever you take a new niyam and then break it, you are eroding the trust Maharaj and Swami have in you. By breaking that trust, you are chipping away at the bond that you share with them.
By honouring a commitment, by honouring the niyam you have taken and sticking to it thoroughly it breeds trust. It speaks of the character and person that you are.
Let us pray that we never break any niyam we pledge before Maharaj and Swami and on top of that, let us pray that any new niyam we pledge, we never back away from. This is the best way to please Maharaj and Swami on a day to day basis.
