Bhago and Mulo

Once when Shriji Maharaj was in conversation with Sura Khachar and Brahmanand Swami, the topic of a very cunning and miserly villager came up. “Maharaj, this villager never loses an argument!” exclaimed Brahmanand Swami. “In fact, he is so miserly,” added Sura Khachar, “that we doubt that he would agree to even sponsor a meal for you!” Maharaj laughed and took up their claims as a challenge. He called this villager and asked, “Would you be so kind as to offer rasoi to us?” “Sure Maharaj!” he touted, “…but only on one condition. If someone will eat five kilos of pendas (sweets) in one sitting, then I will be more than happy to sponsor a meal!” After hearing his condition, everyone knew that the cunning old man played his way out of providing the rasoi. It was clear that no human could possibly eat so many sweets in just one sitting. But to everyone’s surprise, Maharaj took up his challenge and secretly began making His own preparations. Maharaj invited Bhago and Mulo to be the contestants of the challenge and gave them a few instructions on how to eat all the pendas. Finally, when the day of the much awaited event arrived Bhago started to eat the pendas and when he could eat no more, excused himself to use the washroom. When he came back he continued to eat the pendas as if he was starving. A few hours went by like this and the cunning villager was getting worried as he felt he would be defeated, and have to make arrangements for the feast. Sweat trickled down the face of the old man as he stared at Bhago and mentally counted all the rupees he would have to spend in order to feed Maharaj and all the sadhus and devotees with him. When Bhago finally finished the very last pendo, the villager unwillingly agreed to sponsor a meal. Everyone, especially villager, Sura Khachar and Brahmanand Swami wanted to know how Maharaj had accomplished this feat. Maharaj just smiled and replied, “Simple! I invited the identical twins Bhago and Mulo and instructed them to fast for two days before the penda eating challenge, dress identically on the day of the challenge, and come out publicly only one at a time. So, on the day of the challenge, while Bhago was eating, Mulo would hide behind a tree and when Bhago excused himself to use the washroom, the twins switched and Mulo continued eating!” In this way, Maharaj was able to humble even the cunning villager. We can see through episodes such as this how Shriji Maharaj was able to change people’s ways and lead them to salvation.
