Deferating the Vedantis

The city of Memdavad was home to many renowned, as well as aspiring scholars. They were known as Vedantis. They were very egoistic and deceived others into believing that they were, in fact, God.

Shriji Maharaj thought, “The behaviour of these Vedantis is not acceptable.” Therefore, he sent Gunatitanand Swami to Memdavad.

News spread that Swami had come to the city. The boastful scholars started to fill the mandir. At the mandir, each of them started shouting, “I am God. There is no need for bhakti. There is no need for me to observe niyams. I am Brahma.”

Silently, Swami watched them. Some time later, he said, “If you are really Brahma, then enter this pillar and make it shake. According to the shastras, Brahma is capable of this feat.”

Now, the Vedantis were afraid. None of them really had the powers of Brahma. They just scared people into believing so. Also, until now, they had not even met anyone who had the power and divinity of Brahma.

Just then, Swami miraculously entered the pillar and it began to tremble. The entire haveli began to shake! Fearing death, some of the Vedantis fled. Swami said, “Now if you are truly Brahma, stop the pillar from shaking.” The Vedantis did not know what to do. Divine light began to shine from Swami’s body. The Vedantis gave up and asked for Swami’s forgiveness.

The haveli then stopped shaking. Swami then taught them about offering devotion to God as his servant. They were grateful for this lesson.

INSPIRATION: Perform bhakti as God’s servant and shed your ego.
