There once was a big field of lush green grass next to a gushing river. Everyday three cows would come to the field to graze. The first cow was named Kodiyo, the second cow was named Dhodiyo and the third cow was named Bhuriyo.
Once, a tiger named Chandu was out hunting and spotted the cows. Chandu thought to himself, “This is great! Not just one cow but three!” Chandu began to sneak towards the cows but they spotted him coming. The cows decided to fight Chandu together.
Chandu pounced on Kodiyo and attacked with his claws. Dhodiyo and Bhuriyo surrounded Chandu and started to attack with their horns. Chandu was no match for the trio and instead ran away as fast as he could.
Quite shaken and angry, Chandu went to the jackal, Pintu, to seek revenge on the cows. He explained the whole story to Pintu. Chandu asked, “The cows are always grazing together and they live together. They do everything together. I need your help to separate them.”
Pintu came up with a plan. He went to the cows and requested, “I am new to this jungle. Do you think I can become your new friend?” The cows happily agreed and Pintu began to stay with the cows. Within a few weeks he earned their trust.
One day Pintu asked Kodiyo, “Kodiyobhai, did Dhodiyobhai show you this field?” Kodiyo replied, “Oh no! I was the one who found this field.”
Jackal responded, “Well then he is lying about it and claiming that he found the field.”
Kodiyo did not like this and decided to stop talking to Dhodiyo. Meanwhile Pintu went to Dhodiyo and told him, “Khodiyo and Bhuriyo told me you like to eat the most out of everyone.”
Dhodiyo replied, “Not at all! I eat the same amount as they do.” Dhodiyo felt very insulted and decided not to talk to Khodiyo or Bhuriyo. Pintu sneaked away to talk to Bhuriyo.
Pintu asked, “Bhuriyo, are you very lazy and mischievous? Dhodiyo and Khodiyo were both telling me this yesterday.” Bhuriyo was smart. He would not believe just anyone before finding out the facts for himself.
Bhuriyo responded, “Oh forget about it. I am the way I am. What is it to you? Why are you troubling yourself with this?”
Thereafter Pintu went to Chandu and told him what he had done. He explained that tomorrow Chandu should be ready because the cows will fight amongst themselves on the field and that will be the perfect moment to strike. Chandu was quite happy with this news.
The next day all three cows came to graze but no one spoke a word to each other. They grazed by themselves at a little distance. Bhuriyo spotted Chandu and alerted Dhodiyo, “I see the tiger coming. We should stand strong against him again.” Dhodiyo thought to himself, “Bhuriyo wants all the green grass to himself so he is scaring me by telling me the tiger is coming.”
Dhodiyo said, “Bhuriyo you want all the grass to yourself. You are guiding me away from it for that reason. There is no tiger.”
As Dhodiyo spoke, the tiger sprang out and started clawing at Dhodiyo. Khodiyo got scared and started to run away. Bhuriyo reminded them, “We have to fight together or one of us will lose our lives to the tiger.”
Fortunately, Dhodiyo realized Bhuriyo was right and the cows began to slam their horns into Chandu. Chandu’s bones were pounded with the weight of the cows and he ran away at the first opportunity he got. Pintu also afraid for his life crept away quietly.
Dhodiyo asked, “Bhuriyo please forgive me. I got sucked in by the jackal’s talks and I said some things I should not have.” Bhuriyo responded, “No, no I don’t have a grudge against you. I don’t want our unity to break. United, we are strong.”
Dhodiyo and Khodiyo realized their mistake and all got together as friends. From that day onwards the three cows made a promise to always stay united.
Moral: In satsang, Yogiji Maharaj has said that if there is samp (unity) nothing is impossible and without samp nothing is possible. |
