How is the Shikshapatri important in our daily life? How is the Shikshapatri important in our daily life?
Answer: Shikshapatri gives us the “do’s” and “don’ts” of life. It is a manual for ideal living; for spiritual living. We should understand its importance in our daily life. Only then are we able to follow Maharaj’s commands sincerely. Here are some points worth thinking about :
Shikshapatri teaches us:
(1) what time to rise in the morning.
(2) to develop good personal habits of hygiene, such as: brushing teeth, having a morning shower, wearing clean clothes, etc.
(3) to study well in school.
(4) to develop important social habits such as, serving our parents in health and illness, respecting elders and teachers, and welcoming visitors to our home, not to backbite, etc.
(5) to respect all God’s creatures by not hurting them or killing them; not even small insects like flies and bugs.
(6) to respect and venerate deities, avatars, shastras, holy places; not to speak bad about any of them.
(7) to be a strict vegetarian.
(8) to avoid bad company and bad things that ruin our life, such as: drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, etc.
(9) to offer devotion to God and the God-realised Sadhu.
(10) which festivals to celebrate during the year and how not to celebrate them.
(11) to become the best, ideal and peace-loving citizen.
(12) to respect our environment; not to pollute it by spitting, urinating, defaecating in gardens, rivers, lakes or public places.

Answer: The origin and details of Ekadashi are given in a separate answer in this FAQ section.

Sanatan Dharma’s shastras sing immense glory of Ekadashi.
- Padma Puran (Brahmakhand 15/2-4)

Just by uttering or hearing the word “Ekadashi”, Yamdut (demons of Yampuri or hell) are frightened. If one keeps awake on the night of Ekadashi and if puja of God is performed with tulsi leaves, then a person attains the punya of one crore (ten million) yagnas.
- Garud Puran (1/127/12)

“If the whole earth is placed as donation on one pan of a weighing scale, and the Ekadashi fast on the other, then the fast will out weigh the earth.”
- Unnamed text

“The fruit of one sixteenth part of an Ekadashi is greater than the merit from 1000 Ashwamedh yagnas and 100 Rajsuya yagnas.”
- Brahmanand Swami

The punya from the donation of one crore (10 million) cows is less than one sixteenth part of the fruit of one Ekadashi.
