Padharamani
(Home visits by sadhus)

Padharamani
is a tradition in the Swaminarayan Sampraday, in which sadhus visit homes of devotees.

The word padharamani comes from padharo in Gujarati, which means welcoming. The devotees welcome Thakorji (Bhagwan) and sadhus in their homes.

The following points describe what occurs during padharamani.

1 When the sadhus enter the house, devotees do charan sparsh – bow down and touch their feet in reverence.

2

In the main room sadhus sing the traditional ordana padas “Aj mare orde re, aviya Avinashi albel…”. Devotees then perform Thakorji’s pujan...

3 ...followed by pujan of sadhus. This involves imprinting kumkum chandlo on their foreheads and garlanding Thakorji and the sadhus.

4 The sadhus also do the same to the devotees.

5 Then arti is performed of Thakorji.

6 Fruits or dry fruits is offered to Thakorji and then to the sadhus.

7 The volunteer with the santo gives an introduction of the family members to the santo. He also lets them know about any special ability of the balaks or any problem.

8

Then comes the most important purpose of the padharamani. Devotees talk with the sadhus. This may be about any difficulties or problems in their daily lives, instilling like, ill health, bad habits or addictions, and so forth. The sadhus then give appropriate guidance and also instill samskars in children and often family members. Pray to Shriji Maharaj and Swamishri on their behalf.

9 Santo then offer advice to the father and balaks, about Satsang, observing niyams, doing regular ghar sadhu, nitya puja, panchang pranams to parents, homework and studying every day. The balaks may also take special personal niyams from the santo, about any of the above.

10 The female members of the family do darshan of Thakorji and can listen to santo from another room. They help out in the padharamani before hand by preparing the food, fruit and juice to be offered to Thakorji and Santo.

11

The Santo take Thakorji to sanctify other rooms in the house and sprinkle flower petals.

12

At the end, devotees offer a gift at the lotus feet of Thakorji for having sanctified the house and boosting their satsang. The sadhus then leave.
