Pleasing Swamishri

Jay had been nervous since early morning. Nervous, but excited! Finally, after four long years, Swamishri had come to San Jose. It was dinner time. Normally, Swamishri would listen to reporting from devotees while having Tharkorji's prasad. But today was a special day. Today the kishore mandal was giving their report to Swamishri.

One by one, everyone spoke before Swamishri. Someone talked about Gujarati class. Someone else told Swamishri about kishore sabha . One kishore talked about the seva that the kishores do at the mandir.

Finally, it was Jay's turn. He had been practicing what to say all day.

“Swami Bapa! To please you we've decided to take a niyam. From now on we've all decided to stop going to Navratri , and not to watch or play garba-raas …”

Swamishri stopped eating and looked up with interest.

“…In fact, because you've come to our mandir, we've prepared our own raas for you. When you see it, you'll be overjoyed!”

Swamishri smiled and replied, “I'm very pleased that you've prepared the raas . But, I'm even more happy to hear that you've all taken a vow to never go to Navratri . Now when I watch your raas tomorrow, I'll be even more pleased.”

Jay was over the moon. This had been his first real conversation with Swamishri. He had never felt like this in his whole life. All the hard work and practice for the dance had paid off. He knew that Swamishri was pleased. But more importantly, Jay and all the kishores had learned an important lesson today. Jay thought to himself, ‘‘We dance, act, and sing on stage at the mandir. Why? To please our guru. But our guru is even more pleased when we live our life according to his wishes.” Jay resolved to never go to Navratri again!
