Swamishri’s Compassion For Animals

Pramukh Swami Maharaj is a God-realised Sadhu. In the Gita, such a sadhu is known as Gunatit, Sthitapragna and Sarvabhuthiterataha. The last word means, one who wishes the good of all living creatures. We can see this virtue in Swamishri. He feels great sorrow and pain at the sufferings of people and animals.

1987 was the year when the rains failed badly in Gujarat, India. There was no water for farming and none for growing grass for cattle either. Thousands of hungry cattle began dying. Those farmers who could not afford to keep them, sent their cattle to panjrapols. These are places where cattle are fed from donations. But the famine was so severe that even panjrapols were over flowing. Many could not afford to feed the huge number of cattle.

Swamishri visited one such panjrapol in Ratanpur, a village near Rajkot, in Saurashtra. It had 5000 calves. When Swamishri entered the open ground, all the calves rushed towards him. They surrounded him, with eyes of hope. Wherever Swamishri moved, they followed him! This moved Swamishri deeply. Tears filled his eyes. The administrator noted this and said, “Bapa, what can we do? These poor calves have been hungry and thirsty for 3 days. They follow every visitor, as if asking “Can you give us some food?”

Swamishri’s heart was pained. He turned around and asked the Kothari Swami of Gondal mandir to instantly order a truck of grass for the calves from Rajkot.

Returning to Gondal Swamishri held a meeting with sadhus and then organized 4 cattle camps for over 10,000 cattle in: Bochasan, Atladra, Sankri and Nenpur (near Amdavad).
