The Other Side of Bapa

Bapa is known for his child-like simplicity, sometimes bordering on the hilarious.
Pujya Pramukh Swami Maharaj was in New Jersey in 1991 in connection with the Cultural Festival of India. He is in the habit of rinsing his mouth with salt water after eating. One day Pujya Purushottamjivan Swami handed him the bottle containing the water. Bapa started rinsing his mouth. As he felt a different taste he asked Swamiji, “Is it salt water?” “Yes, I filled the bottle this morning.” Swamishri kept quiet. He completed rinsing his mouth. As he had put the question twice, Purushottamjivan Swami had some doubt. He went inside the kitchen, took a sip and found that it was not salt water, but citric acid. But Swamishri went through with rinsing without a murmur. He displayed no trace of anger or unease. Such is the quality of a Satpurush.
On December 6, 2002, Swamishri was in Gondal. After a visit to the bathroom, he was sitting on the bed. He had his refreshment. A boy named Ghanshyam was standing before him. Bapa divined what was passing through his mind and asked, “Ghanshyam, you want to say something.” Pujya Parmanand Swami was standing beside him. He said, “Just now we were discussing about tilak-chandlo. Ghanshyam is reluctant to have chandlo. He is not prepared as yet.’’ Swamishri at once reasoned, “Ghanshyam, when you get married, your mother-in-law comes to apply tilak-chandlo, will you agree or not?” The boy burst out laughing. Bapa asked him to come near. He pretended as if he was putting tilak-chandlo on his forehead. He told him, “You should have tilak-chandlo to please the Satpurush. What objection do you have?” The boy got over his shyness and promised to wear tilak-chandlo.
On November 5, 2002, Swamishri was in Gondal. He was preparing to retire for the night. Two children Mayur and Mumukshu were standing in the room. Pujya Krishnavallabh Swami said, “For two days, these children have been wanting to see your night dress.” Swamishri had a hearty laugh. “Who wants to see our night dress?” He called them near. The boys became shy. Mumukshu, however, came near and got on to the bed. Swamishri took off his upper cloth and said, “This is our night dress. Yours has to be changed. In our case, it remains the same. Do you want to wear it? Take it.” Saying this, he wrapped Mumukshu with it. As Mumukshu wanted to see the night dress, Swamishri wrapped his unique night dress around his shoulders.
