A Life of Inspiration

Once, a ten-year old boy went to a village called Rajnagar, near Vadodara. Since it was the day of ekadashi, he was fasting for the day. A man named Chhotubhai of Rajnagar was very fond of children and he liked this boy in particular because he was studious and disciplined. Chhotubhai used to buy firecrackers and sweets for him quite frequently. In Rajnagar, Chhotubhai had arranged a treat for all the kids. He invited the boy to his house along with the other children. “But I am observing a fast today, Chhotubhai,” said the boy politely. “It doesn’t matter,” said Chhotubhai with a big smile, “you are allowed to eat one meal today, so come and join us.”

“No, I am sorry,” pleaded the boy. “I only eat fruits on ekadashi so please forgive me. I cannot come.”

Chhotubhai was surprised by the child’s firmness in observing ekadashi. He urged him to come to the feast with the hope that the child would eventually give in. But the child was as firm as a rock. He did not budge from his conviction!

“Very well,” conceded Chhotubhai, “we’ll get you some fruits.” Everybody realized how firm and disciplined the boy was in his observance of ekadashi. They all wished that they too could become staunch like him. Other children would easily have been tempted by such a feast, but he was made of a different mettle.

Bhagwan Swaminarayan says in the Vachanamrut, “One who is full of virtues, is disciplined right from childhood. He would not succumb to the pleasures of the sense of taste and would control his desire for sumptuous food. Further he would subject his body to austerities.” Do you know who this boy was? The boy was none other than Shantilal, our beloved guru – Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Today, at the age of 87, he still continues to inspire us and teach us how to please Maharaj and experience his happiness.
