Humbleness in Darkness

Humbleness in Darkness

The clock struck nine. In a small village two sadhus were nearing Swamiji's room when the electricity faltered once again. Transfixed to the floor, with some important files grasped tightly in his hands, one of the sadhus uttered in slight annoyance, "Oh well, we'll see Swamiji (Pramukh Swami Maharaj) tomorrow morning so he can plough through the files in bright light." Just when they were about to retrace their footsteps, Swamiji from inside the room loudly called, "Please, do come in." The omniscient Swamiji was fully aware of everything. At the words of their Guru, the sadhus entered the room which was bereft of any light whatsoever. Swamiji welcomed them nearer. While their vision was adjusting to the intense darkness, both the sadhus were under the spell of temporary blindness. Swamiji, taking this opportunity and quickly reshuffling the surrounding objects, offered an asan (sitting mat) to the sadhus. Relaxing comfortably on it, the sadhus remained engrossed in listening to the nectarine words of Swamiji. Thirty minutes ticked by and presto! The light bulbs flickered alight and restored the brightness.

The scene of the room was canopied in pitch darkness but it didn't remain so in bright light. At once, the sadhus jumped to their feet and offered their prostrations at the Swamiji's lotus feet. Tears welled up and they prayed to Swamiji to forgive them. Swamiji, with his child-like innocence, simply wondered at the strange happening. He rushed to stop the sadhus and enquired about their sudden unusual behavior. With folded hands, the sadhus remained speechless. Assuring them that they had committed no wrong, Swamiji blessed them. What mystery occurred in that room, leading to the sudden prayers of forgiveness by the two sadhus? What went on, is a question we all desire to be answered. Well, in the dark Swamiji had slipped his own asan for the sadhus to rest on. Later on, when the sadhus became aware of the situation they just couldn't believe their eyes.

Seeing their beloved Guru sitting on the bare floor, their hearts crumbled to pieces. But yet, how true it was, there, before their naked eyes was Swamiji on the floor, ever smiling. Is it not true that a burglar cashes in with a theft when darkness prevails? So too, very true indeed is the fact that a God-communion sadhu, worshiped by millions all over the globe, exhibits his humble unparalleled saintliness even when darkness prevails.
