Saying of Swamishri

Right Farming

Swamishri was in Vidyanagar. As devotees filed past for his blessings, Swamishri called a youth back. He was a farmer from a village of Charotar district.

“I have heard,” Swamishri began, “that you are extravagant in your spendings. Is that true?”

The youth remained silent. So on his behalf a sadhu revealed, “He is always experimenting in farming. Till now he has failed in most of them and lost lots of money.”

“What crops do you sow?” Swamishri enquired.

“Tomatoes and ladyfingers,” he replied.

“Did you get any profit?”

“No. I suffered a loss.”

Like a seasoned counsellor and patriarch Swamishri advised, “Farm only those products that you have been doing for years and in which you have experience. If rice and wheat grow well, then sow them but do not try vegetables. There is no need to lose your money unnecessarily. Work hard. If you need a well then it is worth spending money for it. But you have to think again when your experiments yield you nothing.

“Your brother sends you money from America, but from your fertile land of Charotar, decide for yourself that you do not have to ask for any more money from him. Keep this in mind.”
