Equanimity in Both Honour & Insult

Equanimity in Both Honour & Insult

Shastriji Maharaj was seated in the small harimandir in Amblivali Pol in Amdavad. Sometime previously, Swamishri had asked a devotee to lend some money on loan to another devotee who was in need. That devotee was unable to repay the debt. The receiver was also a devotee but overlooking his devotion to his guru, this time, he spoke many improper words to Swamishri and asked his debt be fully repaid now. Swamishri sat there with a mala in his hand. Each bead was being turned upon the reciting of the name of Maharaj; Swamishri’s throat was constantly moving due to recitation of the mantra. Yet, not one line on Swamishri’s face had changed. Swamishri did not reply at all, nor say anything to that devotee.

After some time, the devotee felt immense guilt upon his behaviour. He came to Swamishri to ask for forgiveness. He broke down in tears and begged for forgiveness.  Swamishri told him, ‘Do not be sorry. We only keep accounts of income, not expenditure. I swear on those present in this sabha today that I have exactly the same love for you right now, as I did when you first came to me today.’ Hearing these words, the devotee fell at the feet of Swamishri!
