The Good and Bad Deeds

The Good and Bad Deeds

Once, a child named Dhaval came to Swamishri and said, "Bapa, I have a question, 'Is there life after death? And if there is, what kind of a life is it? And does God come to take everybody to heaven? Or do they go wherever they please? And after going there, what do they do? How do they live?' They were very wise questions from an eight-year-old boy.

Swamishri replied, "After the body dies, the soul gets a divine body. After that there is no death. If a man performs good deeds then God comes to take him to heaven and if he does not, the he goes to hell and becomes unhappy. Whosoever goes with God becomes happy."

"What are good deeds and what are bad deeds?" Dhaval inquired again.

Swamishri answered, "When you go to school and they give you meat or chicken and if you eat it, that is a bad deed. Smoking, drinking alcohol, eating things that we shouldn't are all bad deeds. Stealing, telling lies, watching TV programmes that show violence, etc. are all bad deeds. But having a bath every morning, performing puja, saying your prayers, telling the rosary, prostrating before God, bowing to your parents, speaking the truth and studying well in school are all good deeds. In wishing good to others we become good and in wishing ill for others we become unhappy."

"Then it is a good deed that I stopped Daddy from smoking, isn't it?" Dhaval asked.

Swamishri blessed him and said, "But now you must also not eat meat and chicken." Dhaval obeyed Swami's command immediately and promised to give up eating meat.
