The Magic Button
Mahant Swami Maharaj writes in Satsang Diksha Shlok #26 that all satsangis should set aside their bad habits. Certainly, habits are tough to break. But if you had a magic button that could help you change any habit of yours, which one would you choose to break?
Aside from hitting a magic button, what practical steps do you think you can take to break this habit? And, one more thing: How do you think it would make your guru feel if you were able to break this habit? |

If I had a magic button, I would get rid of my habit of biting my nails because it’s not hygienic, and it lets germs get into my tummy!

Jay Swaminarayan, everyone. If I was to press a magic button and break a bad habit, I would break my habit of being stubborn so I can start following my parents’ agnas. Jay Swaminarayan

I would choose to break my habit of missing sabha sometimes. That’s because I know sabha is more fun than elsewhere, since going to sabha teaches you new things.

Sometimes, I get angry very quickly, and I know it’s not a good habit. So, I have decided that when I feel angry, I will stop and count 1 to 5 before I say anything. I think this will help me calm down and not say hurtful words. I will try to speak politely, even when I am upset. I know I may make mistakes, but I will keep trying every day. I really want to improve myself and earn Swami Bapa’s rajipo.

I would leave the habit of raising my voice at my family members. And I would like to start taking care of myself and doing my work on my own (being independent). Guruhari Mahant Swami Maharaj inspires me to be good like this. Jay Swaminarayan!!

If I had a magic button, I would want to break my habit of krodh (anger). When my mother or father says no to me for something, I get angry on them for a little bit. But then, I realise that I was wrong. Please, Swami Bapa, help me break this habit and help me become what you would like me to be. Jay Swaminarayan.

If I had a magic button to break a bad habit, I would choose to break the habit of waking up late or being lazy, as this is a major obstacle in both spiritual and daily life.
I have memorized all 315 shloks, and this shlok is one of my favourites. I also tell my friends this shlok to encourage them to quit their bad habits.
I like this shlok a lot, especially because I want to overcome laziness in my studies. With this shlok, I remind myself that laziness will not bring me any good, so I should work hard and finish all of my tasks on time. Jay Swaminaryan.
